Dear friends and colleagues,

it is a great honour and pleasure to announce "Hydrocephalus 2008", in the sequence of the successful international and interdisciplinary congress on hydrocephalus held in Göteborg, September 2006, hosted by Carsten Wikkelsö, Göteborg University. In the tradition of the Göteborg meeting, professionals from the various specialties involved in the care of both paediatric and aged patients with hydrocephalus will present up-to-date experimental and clinical research to improve our understanding in the classification, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, outcome, outcome assessment and rehabilitation and quality of life aspects.

On behalf of the conference organizers, we invite you and welcome you to "Hydrocephalus2008" and look forward to seeing you in Hannover.

Scientific outline

The 2nd international and interdisciplinary congress "Hydrocephalus 2008" will challenge established as well as non-traditional concepts in the diagnosis, treatment and outcome assessment of hydrocephalus and focus on new clinical and experimental research issues (e.g. "intelligent shunt designs", future concepts of modelling the CSF system and CSF dynamics, non-invasive diagnostic tools, functional and metbolic imaging, biomarkers, neuropsychology and cognitive function and outcome, aspects of dementia, "neuromodulative" pharmacological treatment and "CNS-drug delivery").

According to positive feed-back from the last meeting, we will maintain the structured character of the scientific sessions to have the chair and co-chair introduce the topic ("state-of-the art") as well as conclude at the end what the session has added to our current knowledge with recommendations for the future. This should be rounded off by a couple of special lectures to important topics.

As highlights of the congress, Dr. A. Marmarou, who just recently hosted the successful 4th international hydrocephalus workshop in Rhodes, Greece, May 2007, announced the closing session on Saturday 20th: Summary comments and impact on guidelines - Directions for future research and clinical trials.

Also, the International society for Hydrocephalus and CSF disorders (ISHCSF)  will be presented and recruit membership. This society was recently created to serve continuity in hydrocephalus research, to support and promote research networks, funding and infrastructure for young researchers.
